What the consumer should know when hiring a contractor:
Washington State law requires that all contractors be licensed, bonded and insured. A company with one or more employees is required to cover them with L & I. In the case of an on the job injury the employee is covered and could not come to you for medical compensation, through your homeowner insurance, or worse, file a law suit.
Some contractors try to get around paying L & I, because it is expensive, by hiring their workers as sub-contractors. The concern for the consumer is, are the sub-contractors licensed, bonded and insured? Is each and every sub on the job covered on L & I?
Not likely.
It is required that employees have a current Washington State driver’s license or ID and a social security card to be employed in Washington State. This shows proof of citizenship. And allows for the employer to pay them through a payroll system and deduct federal taxes and the employee’s amount of L & I coverage.
The bond is usually paid up front by the contractor in the amount of $6000.00. This is in place to protect you the consumer. In the case the work was unsatisfactory or damage was done to carpet or driveway, and the contractor refused to return. You then have the bond money to go after for your damages.
The state minimum for liability insurance is $300,000.00. Does this cover your investment in the case of a catastrophic accident? These are all questions you should ask a contractor before doing business. Go on line and confirm that the license, and L& I are current.
